Dr. Vernon Lee Kiker
Vernon Lee Amateur Gymnastics Academy takes its
name in memory of Dr. Vernon Lee Kiker, who was a professor at California
State University for thirty-two years, specializing in experimental
psychology and renowned as a leader in that field.
Dr. Kiker supported the gymnastics programs offered
at Pasadena City College and California State University until they
closed. His interest in gymnastics started early, showing great
skill on the trampoline and at polo as a student. After he earned
his doctorate, he maintained the connection by working with students
who practiced gymnastics to ensure they had proper nutrition and
clothing and in helping them stay focused on their academic studies
and intended careers.
Our founder, Luzia Wiesmuller, met Dr. Kiker when
she immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1979. He was
very supportive of her while she was establishing her career here
in gymnastics.
Dr. Vernon Lee Kiker died on August 2, 1992, leaving
behind him a legacy of service and commitment to gymnastics. Luzia
is proud to have been able to keep the memory of Dr. Vernon Lee
Kiker and his contribution to gymnastics alive by naming our academy
after him!
