Who Is Vernon Lee?

Vernon Lee Amateur Gymnastics Academy takes its name in memory of Dr. Vernon Lee Kiker.

Dr. Kiker was a professor at California State University Los Angeles for thirty-two years and specialized in experimental psychology as a renowned leader in his field. He was deeply involved in gymnastics through philanthropic activities and support for its growth in So-Cal. His interest in gymnastics started early, showing great skill on the trampoline and at polo as a student.

After earning his doctorate, he supported student gymnasts to ensure they had proper nutrition and clothing, and helped them stay focused on their academic studies and intended careers. Dr. Kiker was a major supporter of the gymnastics programs offered at Pasadena City College and CSULA until they closed.

Our founder, Luzia Wiesmuller, met Dr. Kiker when she immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1979. He supported her while she was establishing her career here in gymnastics.

Dr. Vernon Lee Kiker died on August 2, 1992, leaving behind him a legacy of service and commitment to gymnastics. Luzia is proud to have been able to keep the memory of Dr. Vernon Lee Kiker and his contribution to gymnastics alive by naming our academy after him in 1994.
